每逢春节，初一“起傩”，半月之内，傩班走街串户，舞姿翩翩，娱神娱人，祝福纳吉。元宵后一至三日“收傩”，结束一年一次的傩事活动。
傩如同南丰人民的亲戚一般，每年正月，走出傩神庙，为人们祈福，这是穿越千年的约定，更是延续千年的守护。

南丰傩舞，自汉迄今，世代相傅，历经唐、宋、元、明、清，盛行不衰，距今已有两千多年的历史，被誉为“中国古代舞蹈活化石”。

汉：
南丰有傩，自汉开始。汉初，长沙王吴芮传傩于南丰西乡一带。
唐：
唐开元八年(720年)，南丰县治迁今所，其时颁布的《大唐开元礼》，对南丰傩的传播起到了促进作用。
宋：
宋代是南丰傩的发展时期，宋室乐艺伎和流散艺人带来京都的文化艺术，使南丰傩戏趋于成熟。
明清：
明清两代，南丰傩进一步完善，清后期，受戏曲影响，“乡傩”进一步娱乐化，编演了许多新的傩舞节目。
现今：
南丰傩舞在党和国家的重视下，通过多次派人挖掘、整理、研究、创新，古老艺术再展新姿。

1992年
江西省文化厅正式命名南丰江西“傩舞之乡”。
2006年
南丰“跳傩”列入国家首批非物质文化遗产项目。
2008年
中国文化部命名南丰为“中国民间文化艺术之乡”。
2015年
《南丰傩舞》荣获“第十二届民间文艺山花奖”。
2019年11月
《国家级非物质文化遗产代表性项目保护单位名单》公布，傩舞（南丰跳傩研究保护中心）获得“南丰跳傩”保护单位资格。

由跳傩衍生的傩面具制造工艺成为南丰的一项传统产业。近年来，涌现出一批以张宜祥、李英、罗春明等傩雕艺术家为代表的傩面具雕刻工作室、雕刻企业，各种雕刻工艺品远销荷兰、希腊、美国等30多个国家，年主营业务收入5000万元以上。
