【溯 源】
关于英歌舞的历史渊源及发源时间，目前尚无确凿记载。清乾隆潮州知府周硕勋的《潮州府志》中就有提及：“农者春时数十辈，插秧田中，命一人挝鼓，每鼓一巡，群歌竞作，连日不绝，名曰秧歌。” 又有《澄海县志》记之:“当春农村，夫男于田插秧，妇子盍鼓，踏相慰，是为秧歌。”这些都是可追溯的关于英歌舞的较早文字记载。潮汕话中，“秧”的发音与“英”字相近，在民间流传，久而久之，演变成了“英歌”。
【演 变】
英歌舞的角色和故事取材于《水浒传》，是集戏剧、舞蹈、武术于一体的大型集体舞，表演规模可分为8人、12人、24人、56人、72人、86人甚至108人。
之所以是水浒故事，是因为其中着力渲染和歌颂的扬正压邪、勇敢拼搏、斗志昂扬的英雄气概和精神风貌，与潮汕人民的精神状态高度契合。随着社会的发展和时代的变迁，潮汕英歌的功能也发生了转变，不再仅仅是娱神的工具，而逐渐演变成了娱人的艺术形式。
【现 时】
据不完全统计，揭阳市如今已有超200支英歌舞队伍。全市共有7个英歌非遗项目，其中1个国家级非遗项目，1个省级非遗项目。国家级非遗项目普宁英歌有省级传承基地2个、市级传承基地3个；全市英歌项目现有各级传承人10人，其中国家级1人、省级2人。近年来，英歌舞以其雄浑的气势和独特的艺术表现力亮相英国、泰国、南非等国家，将华夏民俗文化展示给世人，掀起一股东方文化热潮。
